Septum Piercing Aftercare: What You Need to Know
The septum piercing is one of the most iconic facial piercings — and with proper care, one of the easiest to heal. At Idle Hands Tattoo & Piercing in Knoxville, TN, we pierce the sweet spot (the columella, not the cartilage) and provide APP-aligned aftercare to ensure a smooth heal.
Healing Timeline
Septum piercings typically heal in 6–8 weeks. Unlike cartilage piercings, the septum heals relatively quickly because it passes through soft tissue — but full stability takes the complete duration.
Cleaning Routine
What to Use
- Sterile saline wound wash (0.9% sodium chloride)
- Avoid: alcohol, peroxide, Bactine, ointments, or anything with additives
How to Clean
- Wash your hands first.
- Spritz sterile saline into each nostril or directly onto the piercing.
- Let it soak briefly, then gently clear any debris.
- Air dry — do not rub.
- Clean 2 times daily. No more.
Lifestyle Tips During Healing
- Avoid blowing your nose aggressively — be gentle
- Don’t flip the jewelry up and down repeatedly (occasional flipping is fine)
- Keep makeup, skincare, and creams away from the piercing site
- Avoid submerging in pools, lakes, or hot tubs for the first 4–6 weeks
- After workouts, rinse with sterile saline
Flipping Your Septum Up
One of the best features of a septum piercing — you can hide it for work or school. You can flip it up inside your nostrils while healing, but try to minimize frequent movement. Each flip is a small irritant, so keep it consistent (all the way up or all the way down).
When Can I Change the Jewelry?
After the full 6–8 week healing period. Septum clickers, seamless rings, and circular barbells are all popular styles. Browse our piercing jewelry collection or explore brands like Buddha Jewelry, Industrial Strength, and Norvoch for premium septum jewelry.
